About Doug

Upon graduation from law school, Doug worked for two years as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Alabama, prosecuting felonies throughout the state. Doug returned home to Mobile in 1984 and has been in private practice in Mobile, specializing in commercial real estate, land use and construction law. He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in Alabama, and is past Chairman of the Mobile City Planning Commission. Doug is listed as one of The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Real Estate Law. He is very active in the Mobile Association of Realtors and the Homebuilders Association of Metro Mobile, serving as their local counsel since 1990.

Doug is a native of Mobile. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Alabama in 1979 and his law degree from Cumberland School of Law in 1982.

Noteworthy Experience:

  • Alter Trading, Corp.: obtained zoning and planning approval for a metal shredding facility.

  • SaltAire Development, LLC: advised developer/owner in the creation of an Alabama Improvement District and developing 500 acres on Mobile Bay.

  • Lafayette Plaza Hotel: counseled hotel owner in $8,000,000 GO Zone bond issue.

What is your favorite thing about the law?

Helping my developer clients put a real estate deal together and make it a reality. I feel like I am part of my client’s business when we close on a big project.

What community projects are you involved in?

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, UMS-Wright Alumni Association, Senior Bowl Committee, and the University of Alabama Student Affairs Leadership Council

What was your first job?

Runner for a law firm when I was 14 years old. That is when I decided I wanted to become an attorney.

What are your hobbies?

Cooking and golf.

What advice would you give a young student in law school?

You will never learn everything there is to know, so don’t worry about it.

How do you define a “good day”?

Leaving the office with the feeling that I helped a client achieve his/her goals.

How do you spend your weekend?

Spending time with my wife and 3 daughters, reading cookbooks, buying groceries and cooking, and maybe a little golf if there is any time left.
