What is your favorite thing about the law?
The law teaches us a different way of thinking and analyzing problems, and in the law we learn that there are always multiple ways of looking at any situation. Further, I enjoy the fact that every legal problem is different, every client matter presents a new opportunity to grow professionally, and therefore one can never reach his full potential as a lawyer but instead is continually challenged by the profession.
What was your first job?
Throughout high school I was a runner for a law firm during the summers and other school breaks. While running errands and organizing files provides almost no substantive legal experience, the job provided a first-hand look at what the practice of law actually looks like, and I would recommend that any would-be attorney work in the legal field before joining the profession.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy playing and watching sports of almost any type and have an unnatural obsession with SEC football. Additionally, I am always searching for good live music, love being on the water, and try to spend as much time with friends as possible.
What advice would you give to a young student in law school?
I think law students tend to obsess about their fellow law students. My advice to a young student would be to figure out what study methods work best for them, make a plan and stick to it, and not to agonize about what other students are doing. There will always be someone who is studying more than you, someone who has longer or better outlines, or students who do not seem to study at all. Stick to your methods and do not worry about what your peers are up to.
What is your favorite lawyer joke?
An airliner was having engine trouble, and the pilot instructed the cabin crew to have the passengers take their seats and get prepared for an emergency landing.
A few minutes later, the pilot asked the flight attendants if everyone was buckled in and ready.
“All set back here, Captain,” came the reply, “except the lawyers are still going around passing out business cards.”
How do you define a “good day?”
I think if, at the end of the day, we stop and take note of all the little positive things that happen in our lives, every day is a good day.
How do you spend your weekend?
Depending on the season, I am always trying to get outdoors with friends on the weekends. Whether that is on the golf course, tailgating for a football game, camping, or out on the lake, spending time outside with good friends is where I am the most content.
